Alvin B. Schenkelberg, 79, of Fort Worth, Texas passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on December 2, 2023. Alvin was born in Templeton, Iowa on family farm on October 7, 1944. He was one of 4 children born to Irish and Jean Schenkelberg. Alvin also enjoyed being a part of a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. He graduated from Sacred Heart parish school in 1959. He then attended and graduated from Kuemper High School in 1963. He chose to attend college at St. Benedicts in Atchison, Kansas and graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1967. After graduation, Al started working for the US Department of Transportation in Ames, Iowa. Then in October of 1967, he was drafted in the US Army and served two years. He was deployed to US Army Support Command in Pliuku, Vietnam. He served as an Administrative Company Clerk and rose to the rank of Specialist 5. After discarge on August 28, 1969, he received the Army Commendation Medal for mertorious service, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal.
After discharge, Al resumed his career in the US Department of Transportation in Ames, Iowa. He moved around with promotions to Salt Lake City, Kansas City, Missouri, Baton Rouge, Lousiana and finally Fort Worth, Texas. He served the government faithfully for 44 years and retired in January 2010. He enjoyed following the Chicago Bears, St. Louis Cardinals and all sports teams.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Henry A (Irish) and Regina (Jean) Schenkelberg.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Katherine, 3 daughters, Jacqueline Weatherly (Richard), Jennifer Schenkelberg, Alison Sunseri (Chris), 4 grandchildren, Vivian Weatherly, George Sunseri, Patrick Sunseri, Sarah Sunseri, brother, Lavern Schenkelberg (Margot), sister, Virginia Behrens (Larry), Marjorie Glover (Jeff) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 17, 2023 at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home, 4350 River Oaks Blvd.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 18, 2023 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 3312 Dryden Road.
Interment of Al's ashes will be held at a later date.
Memorials: Any donations can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Andrew Catholic Church.
