Doyle Gene Nickels

Doyle passed away January 28, 2024 after a valiant battle with cancer, at the age of 86.

Visitation: 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Thompson's Harveson and Cole Funeral Home, 4350 River Oaks Blvd, Fort Worth, TX 76114.

Burial: 2:30 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2024, at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211.

Doyle was born October 24, 1937, in Ash Flat, Arkansas, the son of Willene Sally and Odis Jack Nickels. The family moved to Kansas City, Kansas in 1945 where he attended Wyandotte High School. Upon graduation in 1956 Doyle entered the United States Marine Corps. Honorably discharged in 1959 he enrolled at the University of Missouri KC and graduated in 1963. That same year he married Kay Williams and was happily married for 60 years. Together they started a life in Kansas City where Doyle worked for Rock Island transportation in sales and management. In 1968, he joined the trucking industry of transportation that included promotions and transfers with various companies that brought the family to Arlington, Texas in 1976.

Doyle and Kay raised their two children in Arlington, Texas. He was their biggest fan and loved attending all activities with his family, especially their sporting events.

After retirement in 1999, he became involved in the Arlington Senior Men’s Golf Association where he made many friends. He was very proud to have played golf with these men and to have won a few events!  Doyle loved playing golf but he was most fond of watching his three grandchildren play sports. From practices, to games, to every school event, he never missed a moment of their lives. He was a great father but the best grandfather.

Doyle was one of a kind, loyal and dedicated to his country as a Marine, his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Charles Dean Nickels, sister, Mary Catherine Shifflett, and his daughter, Penny Elizabeth Nickels.

He is survived by his wife, Kay Lynn Nickels; his son, David and his wife, Jennifer; grandchildren, Bart, Hubbard and Corbin Cate Nickels; brother, Bobby Nickels and his wife, Gennie; and countless nieces, nephews and friends.
