Theodore Oberlin Carter

Theodore Oberlin Carter, Jr. (Ted) has joined his beloved daughter, parents, sister, brother, and grandson in heaven on January 20, 2021.Born on February 26, 1932, in Fort Worth, Texas, he was the second of eight children. He was very proud of his siblings and the fact that as their big brother, he helped with their care. Ted attended St. Ignatius Catholic School and served as an altar boy at St. Patrick’s. He graduated from Lanieri High School, where he played basketball and perfected his distinctive and beautiful handwriting. He attended St. Mary’s University of San Antonio, and among other activities, participated in ROTC and played on the tennis team.Ted served as a first lieutenant in the US Army and when he wasn’t watching a radar screen, he could be found on the tennis courts. After leaving the military, he settled in Fort Worth and then moved to Arlington, where he proudly raised six daughters. He worked into his seventies selling electronics and other technical equipment, succeeding due to his amazing attention to detail. He continued to play tennis and taught it to his daughters, with mixed success. Ted caught the soccer bug when his younger children began playing, and began a 40 year journey as a coach. When his daughters no longer played, he continued to coach girls indoor and outdoor soccer. Because of him, many of his players were able to get college athletic scholarships.A voracious reader, he loved spy thrillers, Sherlock Holmes, and westerns. He traveled to several countries, his favorite being Germany. Ted loved all sports and was a natural at most. He loved a good meal, a nice wine or beer, fine tobacco in his pipe, and the company of his beloved family. He will be greatly missed.He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Carter, Sr. and Verdi Louise Carter; brother, Anthony Carter; sister, Verdi Carter; daughter, Andrea Carter; grandson, Stephen Murphy.Survived by brothers, Charles Carter, Joseph Carter and his wife Patsy; sisters, Jean Yamada, Theresa Whalen and Mary Carter; daughters, Dawn Rhoades, Kim Murphy, Tracy Campbell and husband Mike, Heather Carter and husband Chris, Stephanie Nichols and husband Derrek; grandchildren, Christopher Carter, Timothy Rhoades, Andrew Murphy, Kristin Langlet, Lexi Stinson and husband Jacob Diehl, Aaron Tyler, Morgan Tyler, Brittan Nichols, Kaelin Nichols, Lucas Nichols, Avery Nichols and Colton Nichols; great Grandchildren, Lola Carter, Daisy Carter and Marcus Dicosola Murphy; cousin, Harriet Jenkins; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and hundreds of former soccer players he coached through the years.
